This is a concept sketch for an important location in my eternally-in-worldbuilding-stage fantasy story. It's also a rare attempt on my part to do landscape painting.
The idea here is that Ravenpeak is a large town/small city built where you'd normally not see such development. The world the story takes place in is on the verge of collapse, and this valley is one of the few places still habitable. As a result, what was an isolated fishing settlement prior to the cataclysm has been forcably grown as large as their resources and technological limits allow. Mountainsides that couldn't previously grow food have been terraced to create room for crops and dwellings, and several thousand people are crammed into this reasonably fertile valley deep in a mountain range.
This sketch only depicts the harbour section that serves as the stable center of the settlement, and which has grown into a major trading and population center. More of the town stretches past where the top of the picture ends, which includes more agriculturally centered areas as well as sections of the town that are more heavily fortified to ward off invasion by the hostile tribes that regularily stage raids on the town. It also depicts the mountain for which the town recieved its name. Under ideal lighting conditions, the contours of the mountain for a shadow that resembles a raven in flight. The name of the town was initially arbitrary, but I was inspired by a similar mountain by Fernie, British Columbia, which has a shadow shapes like a horse and rider at full gallop (at sunset).
My biggest concern is that the geological formations depicted aren't believable. Anyone have any expertise in this area?
